What Is It?
2016 Cadillac ATS-V

What's New About This Model?
The 2016 Cadillac ATS-V is a performance-oriented variant of the entry-level rear-wheel-drive ATS. Available as a sedan or coupe, it's the smallest and lightest of the company's "V" series models to date. The ATS-V carries a more powerful version of the corporate twin-turbo V6 engine and performance-oriented tires, suspension, body and cabin alterations.

When Does It Go on Sale?
Cadillac says production of the 2016 ATS-V will begin in the spring of 2015.

How Much Does It Cost?
No official pricing has been released yet, but we expect the ATS-V will slightly undercut its archrival, the BMW M4, which starts at $64,200.

What Kind of Engines and Transmissions Does It Have?
The ATS-V comes with one engine, a hotted-up version of the direct-injected, twin-turbocharged 3.6-liter V6 found in the larger CTS Vsport. Changes include titanium connecting rods, a revised intercooler and upgraded turbochargers with low-inertia titanium-aluminide turbine wheels.

With these changes, the ATS-V generates 455 horsepower at 5,750 rpm and 445 pound-feet of torque at 3,500 rpm.

Enthusiasts will be relieved to know that the ATS-V offers a six-speed manual transmission as an alternative to the eight-speed automatic. The manual includes the ability to shift without lifting from the throttle, plus rev-match downshifts.

What Other Upgrades Are Included?
Beyond structural reinforcements that stiffen up the body shell, the ATS-V includes adaptive dampers (of the magnetorheological variety), a beefed-up driveline, performance-oriented Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires (measuring 255/35 in front and 275/35 in the rear), wider 18-inch forged wheels, an active limited-slip differential, upsized brakes (the front brakes are from the previous CTS-V), a carbon-fiber hood, new seats, revised suspension bushings, plus stiffer springs and stabilizer bars.

The coupe shaves a few pounds from the sedan's 3,700-pound curb weight and rides on a slightly wider rear track width. It also is a hair stiffer, structurally.

Most of the exterior body panels have been massaged to some degree as well. The carbon hood features a functional vent for adding cooling and improved aerodynamics, while the grille has a wider opening for improved airflow. There are also revised rocker panels and wider fenders to accommodate the larger wheels and tires.

The end result is that the ATS-V laps GM's Milford Road Course 6.0 seconds quicker than the CTS Vsport.

Are There Any Optional Packages Offered?
Two significant option packages, Carbon Fiber and Track, will be available. The former includes more aggressive fascias, spoiler and sill extensions. The Track package adds a lighter battery and a Performance Data Recorder similar to that introduced on the Corvette and Camaro Z/28.

What Models Will It Compete Against?
Audi RS 5: If you want all-wheel drive, look no further than the Audi. It is on the heavy side, though. No turbos here, just a satisfying, high-revving normally aspirated V8.

BMW M3/M4: Their relatively tidy mass, twin-turbo inline-6 and choice of gearbox make the M3 and M4 the measure of their respective classes...so far.

Lexus RC F: A striking cabin and friendly handling are the RC F's strong suits. Like the Audi, it, too, is portly. And only available with an automatic gearbox.

Should You Wait for It?
There's tremendous potential inked out on the ATS-V's spec sheet. If there's a car that can topple the BMW M4, this will be it, though it won't be available until spring in 2015. If you can't wait that long, the M4 is already ready for you.

It's pretty awesome if ATS-V generates 455 horsepower at 5,750 rpm. The beast with beauty.
